Malaria: an unusual cause of FUO in Kansas

A 7-year-old Vietnamese boy admitted to hospital in the USA with fever of unknown origin (FUO) was found to have malaria (probably Plasmodium vivax). General information on therapy and prophylaxis, as provided by the Centers for Disease Control, is tabulated. Malaria must be considered in the differential diagnosis of FUO in Southeast Asian refugees as well as in unprotected travellers.
