Efficacy of tetracycline/novobiocin combination against canine upper respiratory infections

In a trial involving 121 dogs at 35 practices in 15 states, upper respiratory infections, primarily kennel cough and tonsillitis, were treated with novobiocin (20 mg/lb/day, tetracycline (25 mg/lb/day) or a combination of 20 mg novobiocin with 20 mg tetracycline/lb/day. Of those receiving the combination therapy, only 14% were not clinically normal after five days' treatment, compared with 36% given novobiocin and 39% given tetracycline. Combination therapy eliminated a higher proportion of pathogenic bacteria and was also superior in chronic cases.
