The increase in blood and brain Al among patients under long-term hemodialysis is apparently due to increased concentrations of the metal in the dialysis fluid. Aluminium chloride, nitrate, lactate and gluconate were injected i.p. to mice at equimolecular doses, equivalent to 54 and 5.4 mg/kg of metal. The blood Al concentrations were increased to very high values with gluconate (99.5 mg/l) to high values with lactate (4.5 mg/l) and to low values with nitrate and chloride (0.3 mg/l). Brain Al concentration was increased only with gluconate at the dose of 54 mg/kg. The quantity of Al found in blood and brain after i.p. administration at equimolecular doses is very dependent on the preparation of Al used.
