Activation of systemic lupus erythematosus by antitubercular drugs

A patient developed skin rash, arthritis and pericardial effusion while on antituberculous therapy, which included isoniazid and p-amino salicylic acid. Investigations, therapeutic test with steroid therapy, together with withdrawal of antitubercular drugs confirmed SLE as the cause of these manifestations. The present status of drug-induced SLE and difficulties encountered in its differentiation from spontaneous SLE are discussed.
