In 65 patients with continuous pacemaking due to grade III atrioventricular block, grade II (2:1) atrioventricular block and sick sinus syndrome the left ventricular contraction periods were analyzed. Polycardiography was carried out before and on the 4th, 8th and 51st days after articial pacemaker implantation. The degree of circulation efficiency was estimated according to NYHA and increase in the value of PEP/LVET index. During pacemaking 4-51 days after pacemaker implantation LVETI gradually increased, PEPI shortened and the PEP/LVET index decreased. A favorable influence of pacemaking on left ventricular contractility is indicated. Before pacemaking no significant differences were found in the values of left ventricular contraction periods between patients with atrioventricular block grade I-II and those with grade III-IV block (NYHA). On the 51st day after pacemaker implantation patients with grade III and IV block showed a statistically significantly greater PEPI and PEP/LVET and significantly lower LVETI compared with patients with atrioventricular block grade I and II (NYHA).
