Sixty-one dogs of varying age, breed and sex with respiratory diseases, mostly (80%) tracheobronchitis, were injected with either 0.1 mg/kg or 0.05 mg/kg of butorphanol tartrate. Coughing was controlled in 93% of the dogs and the response in 47 was judged to be good or excellent. Noticable side effects were sedation in 34% of dogs given 0.1 mg/kg and 3.5 given 0.05 mg/kg, nervousness (2 dogs), rash (1), anorexia (2), emesis (1), tremors (1) and diarrhoea (1).
