The clinical effects of clenbuterol (20, 30 and 40 .mu.g) were compared with those of placebo when each was administered twice daily for 2 wk to asthmatic patients. The PEFR values at the end of the clenbuterol 40 .mu.g period were significantly higher than those on placebo, but although improvements in lung function at other times were generally greater with the active treatments than placebo, the differences were not significant. Tolerance of tremor seemed to occur, as the incidence with the high dose of clenbuterol was similar to that with placebo and less than that with the lower doses.
