In addition to the lung, M. pneumoniae can involve the pleura, causing pleural effusions, and it may also cause otitis and sinusitis. There are also various lesions in the skin and mucous membranes, involvement of the liver and the pancreas, and damage to the heart and pericardium with ECG changes. The hematologic system may be involved with development of hemolysis. The nervous system and the musculoskeletal system can also be affected. Treatment is with antibiotics of the tetracycline group or erythromycin. The response is rapid and full recovery is usually achieved. Some patients recover without the diagnosis ever having been made.
