Fifty-seven patients with gastrointestinal fistulas from different levels were treated with parenteral hyperalimentation. The 57 patients were parenterally maintained for 1611 days and the spontaneous fistula closure occurred in 43.8%. The overall mortality rate in this series was 33%. The role of parenteral nutrition in the treatment of gastrointestinal fistulas is analyzed. Some aspects of the surgical treatment of fistulas are also discussed.
