Intraocular lens implantation after cataract extraction

A series of 455 intraocular lenses implanted during a 7 yr. period, is presented. Visual acuity of 6/12 or better was achieved in 83% of the patients. Among the major causes of visual acuity of less than 6/12 were senile macular degeneration in 28, cystoid macular edema in 9 and corneal edema in 9. Various kinds of lenses were implanted, starting with Copland lens, then the Binkhorst iris clip and irido-capsular lens and finally the Shearing posterior chamber lens. Forty patients underwent additional surgery, of whom 22 required discussion of the posterior capsule, 7 retinal detachment surgery, 5 keratoplasty and in 2 the lenses had to be removed. Forty-eight patients had bilateral implants (10.5%), which indicates satisfactory results in the 1st eye. Seventeen children had implant surgery because the intra-ocular lens offers a good chance to prevent amblyopia and strabismus; 244 operations were intracapsular while 211 were extracapsular. Apparently implant surgery should be considered an alternative in the treatment of cataract.
