The hemodynamic effects of 2 vasodilator drugs were compared in 2 identical groups of patients with heart failure. In the group 1 (6 patients) prazosine was given by mouth at a dose of 40 .mu.g/kg, and the measurements carried out 60 min after the dose. In group II, nicergoline was administered by continuous i.v. infusion, usually at doses of 0.5-1.5 mg/min and the measurements were carried out at the dose permitting a marked reduction in aortic pressure and/or left ventricular telediastolic pressure. The 2 drugs caused a mixed arterial and venous vasodilatation responsible for similar effects: increase in cardiac output, reduction in systemic and pulmonary arterial resistances and filling pressures, without tachycardia, without inotropic effect or any change in coronary circulation.
