The physiological importance of fusion is discussed with special reference to the relationship between fusion and visual acuity. Refraction, horizontal movement, and quantitative and qualitative components of fusion were studied in binocular and amblyopic subjects. In finger-counting tests at two to three meters or visual acuity of 0.1 in one eye and adequate or normal vision in the other, fusion values were within the normal range in 21 of the 180 subjects examined. In cases of eccentric fixation the parafoveal "center" of the retina is capable of triggering binocular vision.
