Components of technical-grade gossypol such as anthranilic acid and HCl migrated into an aqueous medium. Gossypol was released from acetate fabric (average amount of 0.03 mg/l) only at high temperatures. Toxicologic experiments showed that extracts of a gossypol-colored acetate fabric had no adverse effect on animals. A high proportion of human volunteers wearing clothes made from the acetate fabric reported negative subjective sensations. Acetate fabric dyed with 0.7% technical-grade gossypol should not be used in the manufacture of clothing that comes in contact with the skin.
