Campylobacter infection from foals

C. jejuni/coli spp. were isolated from five foals under 4 months old with a history of pyrexia, colic and acute diarrhoea. Thermophilic Campylobacter spp. were not isolated from 15 other faecal samples in routine screening for Salmonella. Symptoms included peritonitis, fever (40 deg C), pasty buff-coloured diarrhoea, enteritis and colitis. One sucking foal showed an unusual incessant chewing and salivation behaviour. While erythromycin at 750 mg four times a day ameliorated the diarrhoea in this foal, acute severe colic developed and it died 10 days later.
