Increased platelet function and von Willebrand factor in vibration syndrome

Platelet function was studied in 30 normal subjects and in 42 patients who were exposed for a long time to vibration of occupational origin, e.g., chain-saw or rock-drill. The value of platelet adhesiveness were 40.2 .+-. 11.9% in the controls and 56.9 .+-. 10.6% in the patients. Platelet aggregation indexes (ADP, collagen, epinephrine) were significantly high compared with those of the normal subjects. Factor VIII-related antigen and von Willebrand factor were 193 .+-. 58% and 228 .+-. 84% in the patients and 99 .+-. 21% and 109 .+-. 41% in normal subjects, respectively. Euglobulin-lysis time was slightly shortened in the patients. The patients evidently have platelet hyperaggregability. The pathogenetic role of platelets in various alterations of the vascular wall and Raynaud's phenomenon in the patients was discussed.
