The need for wide practical use of noninvasive diagnostic procedures, primarily of computer tomography, is discussed, with emphasis on a trend in modern neurosurgery to decrease the traumatism and risk of complex operations on the brain and spinal cord. Two new lines of research, stereotaxic surgery and microsurgery, are of great importance in achieving this. There is a progressive trend toward expanding indications for operations on the brain and spinal cord in elderly patients which has become possible because of the advances made in anesthesiology and neurosurgery.
