Of the 12,395 women who delivered at the Hospital of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Martin [Czechoslovakia] over the years 1973-1978, clinically manifest infection of the uropoietic system (IUS) was recorded in 212 patients. On analyzing the clinical reports of 143 mothers and their fetuses and those of the control group, no significant differences were established in the parameters under study. A higher occurrence rate of pre-term deliveries and of babies with a lower birth wt and a retarded adaptation period was observed in the IUS group compared to controls. The importance of using semiquantitative methods of urinalysis in prenatal clinics is emphasized.
