Using DEAE-Sephadex A-50 chromatography, the whole population of influenza A (Hong Kong) 1/68 virus was divided into subpopulations. Inoculation of mouse fibroblast L cells with them and subsequent passage resulted in the formation of persistent infection. During passage (152 days) differences were found between the sublines in localization of a specific antigen detected by the immunofluorescent method. The viruses isolated from the persistently infected cells differed in biologic properties.
