Purification of proteins or other biological macromolecules can be performed by techniques based on the biospecific affinity of these species for ligands linked to water-soluble polymers. The characteristics of such water-soluble biospecific polymers are presented, their applicability in protein purification techniques in discussed and their advantages and limitations are compared with those of affinity chromatography.
