Serological evidence of arboviral infections (flaviviruses) in Kerala

Serum samples (850) from blood donors (400), pregnant women (384) and healthy staff members and students (66) were investigated by the hemagglutination inhibition [HAI] test for the presence of antibody against an .alpha. virus [Chikungunya (CHICK)] and 3 flaviviruses [Japanese encephalitis (JE), West Nile (WN) and Dengue type-2 (DEN-2)]. HAI antibody against JE, WN, DEN-2 and CHICK were detected in 46.6, 48.5, 32.4 and 3.0% of the sera, respectively. Group-B viral antibodies were detected in 77.4% of the sera tested; Group-A (CHICK) antibody was found in 3.0% of them. A higher percentage of positivity was obtained in the age group of 31-60 yr. Group-B arboviral infections are evidently prevalent in Kerala.
