Parenteral nutrition in septic patients with acute renal failure in polyuric phase

A prospective study was performed by including in the parenteral nutrition program 35 septic patients with acute renal failure in the polyuric phase. They were distributed into 3 groups. The 1st one received essential amino acids, and the others corresponded to standard schedules with and without fat. Although the results obtained in connection with N balance, plasma levels of urea, creatinine and uric acid and urinary multiplication of urea are satisfactory with all the schedules, the best results of the conventional schedule with fat support the achievement of positive N balances, i.e., an anabolic phase; this should be the aim of the nutrition plan.
