Disorders of the absorptive function of the small intestine are classified under primary and secondary malabsorption depending on whether they were present at birth or acquired and differential-diagnostic criteria for the 3 most common forms are tabulated. Treatment by diet, the use of enzyme, mineral or vitamin preparations and stimulants of the absorptive function of the intestine are discussed.
