Graphic evaluation of the progress of labor under continuous epidural anesthesia

The effect of continuous epidural analgesia upon the advancement of labor was analyzed. The duration of cervical os dilatation and of the presenting part's descent were analyzed in 80 women delivering with this type of analgesia and in 80 other cases delivering without this type of analgesia. The results were presented graphically comparing both groups. The continuous epidural analgesia did not disturb the labor advance, in protracted labors it enhanced the cervical effacement and the os dilatation. In the observed cases no abnormalities in the head presentation nor in its passage were observed. Practical application of these observations demonstrates the possibility of therapeutic influence upon the course of labor by means of constant epidural analgesia.
