Comparative study on the various parameters in selecting the optimal size of endotracheal tube

Parameters in selecting the optimal size of endotracheal tubes [age, body weight, body height, body surface area and diameters of thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger and small finger] were measured. Relationship between each parameter and the outer diameter of optimal endotracheal tube was compared statistically, and r value was used to judge relationship. The best r [0.974] was obtained for body height, followed by body surface area, diameters of fingers (the smaller fingers had the better relationship), body weight and age. A clinically convenient nomogram to select the optimal endotracheal tube was constructed.
