Measurements of the threshold of stapedius muscle reflex in assessing the sensitivity to noise

The threshold of the stapedius muscle reflex was measured using pure-tone stimulation, narrow noise bands, white noise and industrial noise of a weaving factory in 56 normal hearing subjects and 50 subjects with perceptive hearing impairment. A relationship was found between the magnitude of the thresholds of this reflex and the type of stimulation. The lowest thresholds of the stapedius muscle reflex were found for white noise followed by narrow band noise, industrial noise and pure tones. In perceptive cochlear hearing impairment, a considerable reduction of the stapedius-muscle reflex threshold was found for all types of stimulation.
