A comparison of mortality in 10 cities in the USA with fluoridated water supplies and 10 nonfluoridated cities (Yiamouyiannis, J. and Burk, D., Fluoride (1977) 10, 102) has been used in evidence that artificial fluoridation of drinking water causes cancer. Several deficiencies are pointed out in the statistical methods used to analyse the findings of that study and it is shown that appropriate analysis of the data from those cities yields additional evidence for the safety of fluoridation, thus agreeing with other investigators who analysed the same data.
