A flexible probe, 1.5 m in length, 1 cm in diameter, carrying 8 groups of 3 annular electrodes, used for recording colonic electrical activity in man is described. The electromyogram of the descending and sigmoid colon was recorded in a bipolar way, during 8-10 h, on an EEG machine with short time constants. Two kinds of spiking activity were recorded; localized short spike bursts and propagated long spike bursts.
