A clinicomorphological examination of 352 patients with various types of gastroduodenal pathology and of 33 persons with normal digestive organs showed a more frequent formation of gastric and atrophic changes in the gastric mucosa under the effect of long-term regurgitation of the duodenal contents into the stomach, considerable correlation between the intensity of gastroduodenal reflux and the reduction of mast cells in the gastic mucosa. The phenomenon of mast cell reduction which plays a substantial role in maintaining tissue homeostasis, is apparently of great importance in the formation of atrophic gastritis and of slowly scarring and callous ulcers in gastroduodenal reflux.
