The influence of 2 anticholinergic drugs, atropine and trihexyphenidyl, on neuromuscular and tremorogenic effect of harmine was examined. In the isolated phrenic nerve diaphragm preparations of the rat, the neuromuscular blocking effect of harmine was inhibited by both drugs. Trihexyphenidyl shared the musculotropic property of atropine. Antagonism of harmine induced tremor in mice was observed after pretreatment with atropine and trihexyphenidyl. Tachyphylaxis to tremor response and neuromuscular paralytic effect of harmine, did not develop. The neuromuscular effect harmine may play a role in the mechanism of its tremorogenic property.
