According to the new Abortion act, abortion is free on request up to the end of the 18th week of pregnancy. Thereafter the approval of the National Board of Health and Welfare is necessary to obtain an abortion and there must be special reasons for the permission. During the first 5 years of the Act, the Committee on Abortions and sterilizations at the National Board developed a policy to deal with the applications for abortion after the 18th week. These cases are only 1% of the total number of abortions (about 300/year). Primarily, the author discusses the Baord's interpretation of the concept of "special reasons." (Author's modified)
