The presence of J chain in human immunocytes containing various Ig classes was recently reported. The presence of J chain in human myeloma cells and secretion into urine were investigated. Myeloma cells were positive for cytoplasmic J chain in 13 cases: 3 of 3 primary macroglobulinemia, 6 of 15 IgG-myeloma, 2 of 7 IgA-myeloma and 2 of 9 BJ-myeloma. None of the 4 cases with benign monoclonal gammopathy was positive for J chain. Secretion of J chain into urine was confirmed in 2 cases: 1 IgG-myeloma and 1 BJ-myeloma. The significance of J chain synthesis in myeloma cells is discussed.
