Exercise test on a cycle ergometer was carried out on the 3rd day of rehabilitation treatment of 151 patients, 6-10 wk after transmural acute myocardial infarction. The most frequent postexercise ECG change was depression of the ST segment observed in 35.8% of the patients. ST segment elevation was found in 21.1% of cases often occurring in cases with anterior wall infarction. In patients with good exercise tolerance, the exercise-induced ST elevation or isolated T-wave changes were not treated as a contraindication to intensive rehabilitation. ECG curves without changes of the repolarization period (negative result of the test) were obtained in 23.2% of cases, mainly in patients with inferior wall infarction. The detectability of ST changes was higher than previously described, apparently a result of simultaneous ECG recording from 3 leads.
