The formation of toxic substance(s) in guinea pig skin subjected to thermal treatment in physiological saline was demonstrated. The hypothesis that the toxin associated with toxemia of burns is derived from thermally modified skin from precursors present in normal skin is supported. Purified toxin is 6-7 times more active than the crude product. Like human skin toxin, it is a glycoprotein lipid complex.
