Foetal hypotrophy as a factor involved in perinatal mortality

In the East Slovakian Region [Czechoslovakia], human perinatal mortality amounted to 19.3% in 1977-1978. Fetal hypotrophy occurred in 10.8% of these perinatally deceased infants. This ratio exceeds over 3-fold the incidence of hypotrophy in the population of babies born within the given period. Particularly striking was the coincidence with inborn developmental defects (36.1%), placental insufficiency (10.7%) and asphyxia sub partu (5.7%), presenting statistically significant differences in the occurrence rate of these causes of death in all the perinatally deceased infants. Morbidity rate for pneumopathies of the respiratory distress syndrome type or due to hyaline membranes was significantly lower. There was a considerable occurrence of hyaline membranes in some cases of prolonged pregnancy associated with fetal hypotrophy. Early diagnosis of fetal hypotrophy can reduce its total occurrence and affect perinatal morbidity.
