Anatomopathological aspects of schistosomiasis. A study of 286 pathological specimens.

A total of 286 schistosomiasis lesions studied between 1956 and 1979 at the Institut de Medecine Tropicale du Service de Sante des Armees is reviewed. After a discussion of the general characteristics, the lesions are discussed with respect to the species involved (249 Schistosoma haematobium, 34 S. mansoni and 3 S. japonicum). The principal characteristics of schistosomiasis due to S. intercalatum are outlined (although no specimens were attributable to this species). The geographical origins of the 276 patients (269 from Africa, one from the French West Indies, 3 from South-East Asia and 3 not known), their sex and age, locaalization of the lesions, and the occurrence of pseudo-tumours (36) and cancer (21), are briefly considered.
