In a fishing village (Kawazu) and a farming village (Kamagaya) in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, mean daily intake of fish was about 250 and 90 g daily, equivalent to 2.5 and 0.9 g eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Plasma was sampled after fasting for 12 h. Plasma EPA and docosahexaenoate and ratio of EPA:arachidonic acid were significantly greater in subjects from Kawazu than in those from Kamagaya. ADP concentration which produced 50% maximum platelet aggregation was 6.6 and 2.3 mu mol/litre for fishing and farming villagers, respectively.
