Immunoglobulin levels in maternal and cord blood

Ig G, A and M were estimated simultaneously in 100 cord and maternal blood samples at the time of delivery and in 100 blood samples of age-matched healthy non-pregnant women. Mean levels of IgG and IgM in maternal blood were higher than those in the controls. No significant difference was observed in IgA levels. Cord blood IgG levels were similar to those of maternal blood levels (P > 0.05), mean IgM and IgA levels were much lower. Three cord blood samples which had higher IgM levels showed significant levels of Toxoplasma antibodies; another sample was positive for syphilis antibodies using the FTA-ABS tests.
