Ionescu-Shiley valve: hemodynamic evaluation and clinical follow-up in 325 patients

A clinical trial with Ionescu-Shiely valve made with bovine pericardium was attempted. A total of 326 of these valves was implanted in 332 patients. Early post-operative mortality was 2.6% (2 of 75) in single aortic valve substitution and 7.7% (12 of 155) for all substitutions, including combined operations (mitral comissurotomy, annuloplasties, saphenous vein bypass, etc.). The early mortality rate for mitral valve substitution was 9.5% (14 of 147). The mean systolic peak was 5.4 mm Hg in the aortic substitution for all sizes and 2.27 mm Hg for the 19 mm diameter ring. There were no embolic disorders for aortic valve substitution. The available data indicate that the risk of thromboembolism is remarkably less.
