Three days after burn injury to 1/3 of the area of the rat exorbital lacrimal and submandibulary salivary glands, the beginning of the mitotic activity was marked by a decreased number of the cells in unaffected parenchymal acini. This number was 18 and 14% less as compared to control. A close reverse correlation between the number of the remaining cells in the acini and the mitotic rate was revealed in the exorbital gland. Then as the cell deficit in the acini was covered by cell proliferation, the mitotic activity fell down and both indeces had approached their initial levels by the 15th day.
