Fifteen foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and 15 domestic cats were infected with 2 strains of rabies virus (LB-1, L-22) perorally. The infected animals were observed for 90 days, and their corneas and brains were examined using direct immunofluorescence. The virus was titrated in the brain and submaxillary salivary glands using the bioprobe method on mice. The cornea-test method and the method of studying smears of the lumbar region of the spinal cord are important and precise in diagnosing rabies in live subjects and posthumously.
