Is beclomethasone dipropionate a gain in the therapy of chronic rhinopathy?

Dexamethasone phosphate was used in otolaryngology. It is used as a nose spray and is helpful in hay fever patients. Depot preparations were sprayed into the inferior concha in nervous rhinopathy; both cause increased plasma cortisol levels with suppression of urinary 17-ketosteroid excretion. Beclomethasone dipropionate is a synthetic corticosteroid with a pronounced antiinflammatory activity, successfully used in dermatology and as an aerosol preparation in asthma. There is general agreement that beclomethasone should not be used during acute rhinitis or in a predominantly purulent infection. Ninety patients were studied with nervous allergic rhinopathy, atopic allergic rhinopathy, drug-induced rhinopathy, nasal polyposis and rhinorrhea, often with combined diagnoses, of several years duration. Results were very good in nervous rhinopathy and atopic rhinopathy. Some patients stopped spraying prematurely due to sneezing which was their principal complaint before treatment. Good results were reported in 65-71% of cases.
