Epidemiology of bacteremia in intensive care units

The bacteremia occurring in 2 intensive care units over 3 yr was studied. The most frequent site of infection was the respiratory tract and the most common pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Gram-negative organisms predominated. An increase in resistance to cephalosporin antibiotics with preservation of sensitivity to aminoglycoside antibiotics, except in the case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, was seen. The need for antibiotic restriction is emphasized. Investigations on septicemia prevention should be continued to prevent a high mortality rate.
