A study of the internal mammary nodes in 25 cases of breast cancer showed that .apprx. one-fifth of clinically operable cases have internal mammary metastasis, more so if the tumor is medially situated or there are a large number of involved axillary lymph nodes. Individual dissection of intercostal spaces can be harmful as it may open up a lymphatic watershed.
