A total of 172 patients suffering from ischemic heart disease and psychopathological changes were treated with the tricyclic antidepressants and placebo. Good results were obtained in 83.2% of cases (in the placebo series in 52.8%), including normalization or considerable improvement of the psychic state in 58.4% (with placebo in 27.8%). The highest effect was seen in patients with affective disorders (apprehension, depression). And the best results were seen with amitripytline. Melipramine produced a negative result in the apprehensive patients. With azaphen fewer side effects were seen than with amitriptyline and melipramine, but it was less effective.
