Nocardiosis in the dog (a clinical case report)

Symptoms of listlessness, depression, elevated body temp. (104 deg F) and weight loss were seen in a 6-yr-old dog. A firm mass, about 7.5 cm diam., at the caudal edge of the sternum was removed surgically and the animal was given antibiotics. After an initial improvement, the dog's condition deteriorated, dyspnoea and weight loss persisted and the animal was killed. Histological sections of lung tissue revealed branching, filamentous hyphae and beaded acid-fast filaments consistent with Nocardia although this organism had not grown in cultures made previously from the subcutaneous mass or the thoracic cavity.
