Urease activity in the contents and tissues of the sheep, pig and chicken gastrointestinal apparatus

Urease activity was estimated in different parts of the gastrointestinal system of 6 adult merino sheep weighing 45 to 50 kg, 10 broiler chickens 55 to 60 days old weighing 1.2 to 1.5 kg and 6 Czechoslovakian Improved White pigs weighing 80 to 100 kg all given a normal diet. In sheep activity was from 0.002 in the abomasum to 1.34 in the caecum, in chickens from 0.028 in the jejunum to 0.17 in the caecum, and in pigs from 0.02 in the jejunum to 0.62 mg ammonia-nitrogen/g dry weight/30 min at 25 deg C in the caecum. No activity was detected in the intestinal wall or the duodenal contents in chickens or in the intestinal and stomach walls and duodenal contents in pigs. Activity throughout the gastrointestinal system was less in pigs and chickens than in sheep.
