A double blind study was carried out to assess the value of BCG vaccination in the prevention of tuberculosis under existing conditions in India. Each and the other with PPD-B. At the same time, 0.1 mg of freeze-dried BCG vaccine or a freeze-dried placebo was given intracutaneously in the left deltoid region. The placebo consisted of a freeze-dried preparation containing 0.15% sodium glutamate and 0.0125% dextran solution. A comparison of the reactions for PPD-S and PPD-B showed that the placebo group had slightly but significantly larger mean size of reaction to each antigen than the vaccinated group. The slightly smaller mean size of reactions in the vaccinated group may be due to depression of reactions by the BCG vaccination given simultaneously. The depressive effect was so small quantitatively that BCG vaccination given simultaneously with tuberculin test probably should not invalidate the results of the tuberculin test.
