Clinical use of piperacetazine to modify behavior in dogs and cats: a practitioner's viewpoint

Of 60 dogs treated with piperacetazine for nervous behaviour and continued barking at one-quarter to one-half the dose recommended for tranquilization and sedation, the problem was alleviated in 52 (86%). Some dogs reacted to the first dose by chewing at their cage bars or tearing up newspapers; one dog became more aggressive. Piperacetazine also controlled fear of thunderstorms in 11 of the 14 dogs treated. In cats piperacetazine controlled anxiety in females in oestrus, minimized aggresive behaviour and enabled oral medication to be given to intractable animals.
