P. aeruginosa strains (346) isolated in patients treated at the Department of Surgery, Institute of Pediatrics, Medical Academy, Krakow [Poland] and 30 strains found in their surroundings were studied. Only 65% of the strains produce pyocyanin, a typical pigment for these bacteria. All the strains are resistant to chloramphenicol whereas they are most sensitive to colistin, gentamicin and polymyxin B. The phage type 1214 was most frequently observed. The highest toxicity was seen in the strains isolated from pus specimens.
