Whole blood viscosity determined at different shear rates, plasma viscosity, red cell [RBC] deformability and fibrinogen concentration were correlated in 22 patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and 22 controls. No significant changes were demonstrated in viscosity or RBC deformability when corrected to a standard fibrinogen concentration and hematocrit. Fibrinogen concentration appeared to be the only significant abnormal parameter in the diseased group.
